Here at Smile On Photography, we offer a variety of props. This blog post is here to feature the props that I offer most often in Newborn Sessions to give my clients an idea of the terminology and styling that I typically use.
This Bucket Prop was originally bought from Little Bird Photography Props. I hope to one day buy more to build a collection but this is the bucket that I have been using for the past 3 years. I've styled it with tieing a wrap around the bucket to give to give it a different colour.
A Flokati is a woven wool rug and is also extremely popular in the newborn photography world.
This Flokati was purchased from another photographer during what we call a "De-stash" where photographers sell props that they no longer use to other photographers. The colour of this flokati is actually more of an ivory colour, and while using it I learned that I could change the colour of the fur really easily to create images where the baby really stands out and it looks like every colour matches and blends well. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made. I also use this same Flokati for Sibling poses and with my ability to change it's colour it can really add some great variety to a gallery.
The Heart Bowl has been super trendy for a while now. Originally Purchased from Tiny Tot Prop Shop based in BC, Canada. This prop is a huge hit with Parents. There's just something about the heart and the love that it signifies surrounding their newborn baby. I love styling and figuring out new ways to use this prop. My current favourite is to have a solid background and some sort of texture to really keep your eyes drawn to baby.
Stars and Moons were such a huge trend a little while ago, I feel like it only lasted for a few months. But during that trend is when I purchased this Moon Bowl. It has really come in handy for those that have cultural or religious ties to the moon and is also big enough for babies of all sizes. This is one of those props that I have seen used in many different ways and I'm excited to continue creatively experimenting with it.
Brown Wood Bed
This Prop was one of the first props that I had purchased when I started my business. I've used this Brown Wood Bed in almost every single session I've ever photographed. Originally Purchased from another local Photographer who makes wooden prop beds. I will be forever thankful that I bought this prop because the build quality is fantastic, still one of the best construction I've ever had in a prop. It features a reinforced base which is super reassuring that it can hold bigger babies. I've also had 3 and 4 year olds sit on this prop and its held up really well. Love It!
White Wood Day Bed
The White Wooden Day Bed is one of my all time favourite Props. I was so lucky to be able to purchase one before the seller stopped making these beds. In a way I'm sad that the vendor stopped producing these beds but at the same time I am so happy that this prop has become an exclusive, a prop that not everyone has.
On the beanbag posing system there are about 5-6 poses that I like to do with every session. Poses include: Head on wrists, Bum Up, Froggy, Hands on Face and Side Laying. Babies absolutely love being posed on the beanbag, and it's the perfect opportunity to get unwrapped poses that really show off all of their little features.
Here is a pull back view of the posing beanbag system. This posing system is by NewbornStudioProps based in the States, I love that there are pockets for storing extra diapers and wipes. As you can see it's super spacious and allows me to photograph infants safely.
